A Thoughtful Transformation: Reimagining a One-Bedroom Apartment in a Charming Character Building

Character buildings tell a story. From original millwork to solid construction and unique layouts, these properties offer a charm that simply can’t be replicated in new builds. At the same time, they often require thoughtful updates to meet modern expectations.

At Cedar and Stone, we recently completed the transformation of a one-bedroom apartment within a charming multi-unit character building. Our goal was simple: preserve the soul of the space while elevating it for modern living and short-term stays.

The Vision: Honouring History While Enhancing Comfort

This apartment was located in a well-maintained, older multi-unit building with beautiful architectural details and a strong sense of place. While the structure itself had timeless appeal, the unit had not been updated in years.

Our vision focused on three key principles:

  • Preserve original character wherever possible

  • Improve functionality for everyday living

  • Elevate the overall experience for guests and tenants

We wanted the space to feel warm, intentional, and quietly refined—never overdesigned, but thoughtfully curated.

Before the Transformation: Charming but Dated

Before renovations, the apartment showed clear signs of its age. While it had good natural light and solid bones, the finishes and layout no longer aligned with modern expectations.

Key challenges included:

  • Worn flooring that dulled the space

  • An outdated kitchen

  • Poor lighting that made rooms feel smaller

  • A bathroom that felt very tired

The apartment lacked cohesion and warmth, making it easy to overlook despite its potential.

Design Approach: Subtle, Timeless, and Functional

Rather than dramatically altering the layout, we focused on refining what already worked. Character buildings benefit from restraint—small, intentional upgrades go much further than heavy-handed renovations.

Our design approach included:

  • A neutral colour palette with warm undertones

  • Natural textures to complement original features

  • Clean lines paired with classic finishes

  • Lighting that enhanced, rather than overpowered, the space

The result is a unit that feels current without losing its identity.

Key Upgrades That Made the Difference

Kitchen Refresh

The kitchen was reworked to improve both function and flow. We introduced modern cabinetry, updated hardware, and durable countertops that complemented the building’s character.

By simplifying the design and improving storage, the kitchen now feels open, practical, and inviting—perfect for both short stays and longer-term occupants.

Flooring and Finishes

Where possible, we restored existing materials rather than replacing them. In areas that required updates, we selected durable flooring that matched the warmth and tone of the original building. We kept and restored the beautiful tile fireplace, which is one of my absolute favourite parts of the space.

Fresh paint in soft, neutral hues instantly brightened the space and created a cohesive feel throughout the unit.

Lighting Improvements

Lighting played a major role in the transformation. We replaced dated fixtures with warm, modern alternatives and added layered lighting to improve both ambiance and functionality.

Proper lighting helped highlight architectural details while making the apartment feel larger and more welcoming.

Bathroom Upgrade

The bathroom was refreshed with modern fixtures, updated tile, and improved lighting. The goal was to create a clean, spa-like space without losing the charm of the original layout.

Small changes—like better storage and updated finishes—made a noticeable difference in daily use.

After the Transformation: Elevated, Comfortable, and Inviting

The finished apartment feels calm, intentional, and timeless. The character of the building remains front and center, but the space now supports modern living with ease.

The one-bedroom layout feels larger and more functional, the kitchen is a pleasure to use, and the overall environment feels curated rather than renovated. It’s the kind of space that photographs beautifully and feels even better in person.

Why Character Buildings Are Worth the Investment

Transforming character properties requires care, patience, and respect for the original structure—but the results are often worth it. These spaces offer:

  • Unique appeal that stands out in the market

  • Strong emotional connection for guests and tenants

  • Long-term value through thoughtful upgrades

  • Timeless design that avoids short-lived trends

When done well, character renovations create elevated environments that feel both grounded and refined.

Conclusion: Elevating What Already Exists

This one-bedroom apartment transformation is a perfect example of Cedar and Stone’s approach—honouring the past while designing for the present. By focusing on thoughtful upgrades and timeless design, we were able to unlock the full potential of a charming space within a character multi-unit building.

Whether for short-term stays or long-term living, these are the kinds of environments that leave a lasting impression.
